July 2002 The Constant Wife

The Constant wife was my very last show in the West End of London, in fact it was to be the very last show I was ever to do. Tony P had now transferred back to the Lyric as Chief LX. I would have my office and workshop in one of the upstairs rooms for a couple of years before moving to the Palladium once the Lyric was sold to Nimax Theatres.

When I started at the Victoria Palace we had been only two theatres of the VP and the London Palladium.

In 1983 the Stoll and Moss theatres had merged to form a closer relationship and then we were the four theatres on Shaftesbury avenue plus Her majesties, And the Theatre Royal Drury Lane Making eight theatres in total. When Robert Homes A’court Brought the group in 1986 he went on a buying spree and added The Garrick, Duchess, Cambridge and Royalty theatres. So for a while we were 12 theatres.

Later the Victoria Palace was sold. With the Purchase by the Really useful Group The Palace, New London, and Adelphi Theatres were added making a Total of 14 Theatres. Later Royalty was sold and then The Duchess and Garrick were also sold, Followed by the Apollo and Lyric. Then the Queens and Gielgud. So no longer would the four theatres remain together after all those years of flying the same flag. Lastly the Palace would be sold leaving only Her Majesties, London Palladium, Theatre Royal Drury lane, And the New London, and Adelphi. Making a total of Five theatres.

It should be noted that as in the rest of the book I have used the names of the the theatres that were contemporary at the time. It also should for accuracy be noted that the Really Useful Group actually had a half share/ownership of the Adelphi Theatre.

Working directly for head office as technical projects supervisor and then technical projects manager with office and workshop at.
